Mosul, Iraq - As per the agreement between Doctors Without Borders (MSF) and the Iraqi Ministry of Health / Nineveh Directorate of Health (DoH), on 31 March 2025, MSF has officially handed over Al-Amal Maternity Clinic in Al-Nahrawan neighborhood, West Mosul, to the Nineveh Directorate of Health. The handover marks the end of nearly six years of MSF’s support in running the clinic and delivering essential maternal healthcare services at Al Amal Clinic in Al- Rafidain Primary Healthcare Center/Mosul, in a post-conflict area with limited access to medical care.

Providing Quality Maternity Care in a Post-Conflict Setting

Since launching the services in July 2019, Al-Amal Maternity Clinic has focused on delivering Sexual & Reproductive Health (SRH) services at Al-Amal Clinic by prioritizing the provision of the Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care to women in west Mosul and surrounding areas. At a time when local healthcare infrastructure was still recovering, Doctors without Borders (MSF) provided free of cost medical services and safe spaces for normal deliveries & support to referral of life-saving Obstetric emergencies , antenatal and postnatal consultations to monitor the health of mothers and newborn babies and family planning services by enabling women to make informed choices about their reproductive health. These core maternal services were central to MSF’s mission to ensure safe pregnancies and childbirth in a region that is still in need of quality healthcare services.

Additional Support Services

Alongside maternity care, MSF teams implemented on-site health promotion and mental health services to support the overall well-being of patients. Educational sessions were regularly conducted to raise awareness on maternal health, personal hygiene, infectious diseases, newborn care & breastfeeding, and Infection Prevention & control (IPC). Mental health services, including individual sessions, played a crucial role in addressing postpartum depression and other maternity-related concerns.
